Can physiotherapy help my dizziness or vertigo?

Our specialist neurological and dizziness physio can help assess and treat dizziness and balance disorders cause by:

 

  • BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo), a disorder of the inner ear resulting in episodes of intense dizziness on certain head movements.

  • Vestibular Neuronitis

  • Labyrinthitis

  • Post acoustic neuroma surgery

  • Stable Meniere’s Disease

  • Brain disorders such as stroke

  • Concussion

  • Migraine

  • Non-specific balance loss in the elderly

What to expect from Dizziness Physiotherapy

Our specialist physiotherapist in trained to assess the cause of dizziness and vertigo using neurological assessment and the Dix-Hallpike test.

Depending on the exact cause of your symptoms physiotherapy may involve the application of the Epley Manoeuvre, or if this is not appropriate or sufficient to improve symptoms we can use specific vestibular rehabilitation exercises.

Vestibular rehabilitation programmes encourage the central nervous system to compensate for, problems with the balance mechanisms and may include:

  • Eye and head movement exercises

  • Exercises to improve standing balance and walking

  • Education and advice on activities of daily living to improve confidence & function

  • Advice on falls reduction/prevention
