Womens Health Physiotherapy

At Chichester Physiotherapy Clinic, we treat pregnancy related conditions such as Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI), Pelvic Girdle Pain, symphysis pubis dysfunction and diastasis recti abdominis (separation of the abdominal muscles).

Stress Urinary Incontinence is the leakage of urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise and is common pre and post natally and during the menopause.

Evidence suggests that pelvic floor muscle exercises, when performed correctly and regularly will reduce stress leakage.

New to the Chichester area:

Fit Back & Bumps educational exercise classes for pregnancy and beyond! Ante and post natal exercise classes run by a specialist Chartered Physiotherapist, incorporating pelvic floor muscle exercise and pilates. Classes are one to one, one to two, or small group sessions and are available locally in the clinic or health club studio. Benefits of exercise include
  • improvement of urinary leakage post natally
  • Reduction in back and pelvic pain
  • Improvement in abdominal muscle tone post natally
  • Improvement in postural awareness and general fitness during and after pregnancy.
Fit to Jump educational exercise classes for the Pelvic Floor Muscles (PFM). Incorporating low impact pilates type exercise and pelvic floor muscle training. Maximise PFM control and improve stress leakage. Classes are available as one to one, one to two or in small groups, depending upon demand. Exercise classes are suitable for all women who wish to improve leakage, particularly those who leak when participating in exercise.

Urinary urgency, frequency and urge leakage Physiotherapy is also an effective treatment for urge incontinence and urinary frequency. Physiotherapy addresses lifestyle including bladder training , avoidance of bladder irritants and fluid modification to normalise bladder function.

Physiotherapy assessment of bowel function for conditions such as constipation, faecal leakage and faecal urgency. Following assessment of bowel function, treatment includes biofeedback to normalise bowel function, anal sphincter strengthening exercises and pelvic floor re education.

Real Time Ultrasound Assessment of Pelvic Floor and bladder function.

Real Time Ultrasonography (RTUS) can be used to provide a picture of the pelvic floor muscles working in “real time”. This is non invasive and can ensure that pelvic floor muscle contractions are correctly performed. This greatly enhances effectiveness of treatment and exercise.
